Blade is in good condition. The surface has light scattered mottling. A little heavier near the point. The edges do not appear to have any nicks. Ricasso is stamped with an Eagle and “N. P. Ames, Springfield” in two lines on one side while the other is stamped “United States 1835” in three lines. Both stampings are rather thin. Cast brass counterguard and grip are dark. Underside of counterguard is stamped with “J. M., ORD” and “H. K. C.” Pommel cap has a nice drooped winged Eagle on both sides.
Scabbard is solid but appears to have been shortened some. When put in the scabbard the sword sticks out approx. three quarters on an inch. When placed alongside the scabbard the point of the sword extends slightly beyond the scabbard tip. The leather body has moderate crazing throughout as well as some surface finish loss. Approx. 90% of finish remains. The brass throat and scabbard tip are dark to match the grip. Scabbard tip exhibits numerous small indentations. Frog button is missing at throat. Back seam of scabbard is good and tight.
