Hilt is made of cast brass with spread winged eagle stamped into both sides of the pommel. Grip has three rivet heads and scalloped feather design. Plain, straight counterguard with a quillon on each end. One side of the counterguard is stamped with the number “47” while the other side is stamped “MS.” showing this was purchased by the state of Massachusetts. Underside of the counterguard has inspector’s initials “WS” on one end and “MPD.” over “ORD” on the other. The blade is fairly clean and bright. There is some light mottling on the point. This is on both sides. The rest of the surface shows some light wear from age. One of the blade’s edges has several small nicks. This blade has three fullers, a long one and two that are short and run parallel to each other. The ricasso is stamped on one side with eagle and “N. P. Ames, Springfield, Mass.” while the other has “United States, 1839, W. S.” Both stampings are readable but a little thin.

The leather scabbard is in good condition. The leather is strong, as is the seam down the back of the scabbard. The leather surfaces do exhibit some moderate crackling with some surface loss along the edges. Patina to the brass throat and drag match the hilt of the sword nicely. The drag does have several very small dings and two of the four pins holding it in place are missing so if forced it does wiggle a bit. If left alone it is fine. The very point is marked “WS.” Brass throat has button for attaching to frog for use on a waist belt.
