This original, Model 1850 Officer’s Staff and Field sword, complete with original metal scabbard, was a specimen imported from the renowned sword-making establishment of Klingenthal in France. The sword measures a total length of almost 37½” from tip to pommel. Steel blade is 31¼” long with a 14” narrow fuller and a wide stopped fuller for the entire blade length. Blade flats are embellished with military motifs. Obverse ricasso exhibits two small civilian stamps or poincons marked onto the metal that indicate the manufacturer to be Klingenthal. A panoply of arms continues on the blade followed with a foliate design, a spreadwinged eagle and then a pennant with the words, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” topped with additional foliate. Reverse blade at the ricasso starts with the arms motif, followed with foliate, then ¾” high block letters “U.S” followed with more arms and foliate design. Blade wears a satin sheen overall likely from light cleaning and it has a number of scattered age discoloration spots and rust pitting mostly on the upper portion of blade. No edge nicks visible.

Sword has a detailed, two-branch band, cutout brass hilt with the guard and knucklebow cast in one piece. Outer band of the hilt features prominent letters “US” surrounded by finely cast foliate. Wrapping the shallow center-swelled, wooden handle is a grip of dark gray sharkskin or rayskin with much of triangular-shaped nodes worn down or missing. Thin, copper, double-twisted wire is wrapped around the grips but is slightly loose in areas close to the Phrygian-style pommel cap border-engraved with an oak leave floral pattern. Knucklebow is slightly loose at the pommel and hilt. Leather blade washer is present at the ricasso. A dark bronze patina covers the hilt, pommel, knucklebow, bands and quillon.

Sword’s undented steel scabbard is adorned with two, plain brass bands, brass drag, and brass throat, all of which bear a simple raised bead design along their edges. Both upper and lower ring mounts exhibits a dark patina. Scabbard is missing two of the three small, brass set screws. The brass drag wears tiny dings and dents commensurate with age but is missing its small retaining screw. Drag also shows a dark patina. Classic M1850 import.
