Here is a fine condition Ames Manufacturing Company saber specimen issued to Federal horsemen during the American Civil War.  Hand-scratched identification on the brass knucklebow indicates that “NATHAN T. FOLWELL    SHARON HILL   DELAWARE Co   PA” was the owner of the saber at one time. No research done at present time.   Blade also stamped with State of New Jersey markings “N.J.” on the obverse ricasso and on the drag of the scabbard.  Produced by the Chicopee, Massachusetts firm of Ames Sword Company, this superlative blade is the Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber and was one of over 31,000 edged weapons produced by Ames for its U.S. Ordnance Department contract in 1864.  Considered a lighter, more maneuverable and finely made weapon than its predecessor the M1840 Wristbreaker, the light cavalry saber weighed 3lbs, 7 oz in the scabbard. The blade length measures 34½”, width is 1 3/32” with a wide fuller 27½” long and the narrow fuller 18¼” long.

Blade is factory-bright, curved and crisp in excellent condition.  Has just three small age discoloration spots visible on the reverse side of blade some 12” down from the point. Marked clearly on the obverse riccasso is “N. J. / U.S. / DR / 1864.” The reverse ricasso bears the three-line arched address of “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS.” Word ‘Manufacturing  Co’ is not visible. The tight, brass hilt retains its original leather washer and a domed pommel cap stamped with “DR”.  Brass hilt with its two-branch guard and knucklebow is strong and tight and wears a mellow bronze patina. . Guards not bent. The shallow grooved, center-swell handle grips feature the typical black leather wrap covering in excellent condition with no rips or flaking.

The undented steel scabbard has acquired a plum brown patina overall with no oxidation and rust spotting.  The two bands are tight and secure two 1 1/8” diameter sword rings. Original scabbard retains its throat collar and exhibits a brazed seam along the entire bottom length of the scabbard where the metal was folded and joined.  Inspector marks “DR” visible on the drag in addition to stamping “N.J”. Shows no edge wear. This handsome Ames saber, at a great price, is certain to compliment any Civil War display or collection.
