400 produced. Maker-mark & Inspector mark [on ricasso]: “Made by / Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass.” “18 / G.G.S. / 1862”. Inspector initials “G.G.S” also appear on counter guard. All markings crisp. Bright, double edged, spear pointed blade measures 19” in length, 1.75” in width at the base. Cast brass hilt displays medium bright coppery patina, with grips molded in scalloped decoration to suggest eagle feathers. Pommel decorated on both sides with American eagle & sword. Black leather scabbard with brass throat & tip, & frog stud attachment on the reverse. Leather exhibit light cracking, but otherwise solid & smooth. Brass-work exhibits light dings & medium coppery patina. Else VG & attractive. Fine collectible.
