FOURTH MODEL BURNSIDE CARBINE IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION

$995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3227

Here is an original Civil War ‘Burnside’ cavalry carbine specimen in good condition overall but is missing its triggerguard inner latch. Produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island, this is the 4th Model carbine, a .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading shortarm that was one of some 7,000 manufactured by the company during 1863 and 1864. A veteran carbine, it employed the uniquely designed, tapered, copper Burnside cartridge.

Carbine features a hinged center section that drops down when the now missing triggerguard inner latch was activated and allows for quick insertion of the brass cartridge. Drop breech inner workings show dried grease in areas. The arm bears serial #9858 and exhibits a dark plum brown patina on the dark pitted surface of all metal surfaces. No original colors. Lockplate tang at wrist shows the maker’s marks “BURNSIDE RIFLE Co. / PROVIDENCE R. I.” Lock markings are visible but pitted, as are the serial numbers.

Mechanics need adjustment. Bore is dusty semi-bright and exhibits good rifling with slight rust oxidation in spots. Dark walnut stock is original and in very good condition with a single light cartouche on the left side at wrist. Left side also exhibits hand carved, ¼” high letters. Two piece stock appears never to have been cleaned and “CAV”. Exhibits shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. Toe area has a 1¼” long slice of wood missing. A single iron swivel secured to the bottom of stock. Left side forend has a small sliver of wood missing under rear sight. Left side receiver fitted with a cavalry sling bar, carry ring, forend and barrel band. Carbine does not have the small guide screw on the right or the left side frame. A great early 4th Model Burnside carbine in need of a triggerguard latch but at a very good price.
