Produced by the Spencer Rifle Company of Boston, Massachusetts, this ten pound Civil War Model 1860 Spencer breechloading repeating carbine is in very good original condition. Carbine, which fired the .52 caliber, 56-56 Spencer rimfire cartridge, has a 22” long barrel fitted to a two-piece black walnut stock. Barrel wears a dusky gray mottled color and exhibits light rust pitting over the entire surface. Has the large folding rear sight with ladder and original front sight. Light gray coloring on the receiver / frame show no case colors. Bore has strong, original six-groove rifling that has light pitting. Would clean to semi-bright.

Untouched black walnut stock has just normal abrasions from use and age but no cracks or repairs. Stock shows just light traces of two cartouches on the left side wrist behind the sling bar plus the remnants of an old paper label glued to left side of stock. Original fore-end is tight and strong with just normal marks from use. Top flat of the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE Co. BOSTON MASS / PAT’D. MARCH 6, 1860” in three lines. Right side of flat exhibits wear that has thinned the maker address stampings. Serial # 52169 is located at the top rear of the receiver near the hammer.

Original, heavy, regular Spencer sling bar and sling ring are tightly secured to the left side of stock. Has the single swivel ring near the heel. Carbine frame screws are original with one screw slightly buggered. All metal surfaces of the carbine exhibit just scattered pinprick rusting and oxidation spots. Iron butt plate and steel magazine tube have a medium gray coloring. Cartridge tube and spring are original and in strong complete condition. Mechanics are crisp. A pleasing classic original Civil War M1860 Spencer carbine.
