CIVIL WAR NEW MODEL 1863 SHARPS CARBINE

$2,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 173-2185

This single-shot, percussion shortarm used during the Civil War is an original Sharps New Model 1863 carbine, a .52 caliber, breech loading specimen. It was invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps.

In very good original condition, this carbine bears serial # 84527 and has a 21½” long round barrel with a ‘straight-breech’ type receiver and lockplate. Two-piece dark black walnut stock and forend are in very good condition and not cleaned. Right side of stock has large 1 1/8” high, hand carved letters “J + B + H.” No patchbox. One government inspector cartouche is just faintly visible under the sling bar. Lock screws have slight buggering.

All metal surfaces of the carbine have been cleaned with light serrations still visible. Has scattered spots of dark oxidation overall. No trace of original colors present. Receiver maker markings and patent designations are clear and readable. Barrel stampings thin. Serial # 84527 is strong. Iron sling ring and bar are tight. Carbine exhibits crisp mechanics. Some major components have sub-inspector’s marks visible. Bore with its six-groove rifling is strong but dusty; could use a cleaning.

This New Model 1863 Sharps carbine is a great original cavalry arm of the Civil War.
