CONFEDERATE RICHMOND CARBINE

$7,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4441

Completely original Richmond Carbine in good condition.

Overall length of the weapon is 40.50 inches measuring from the center of the buttplate to the muzzle. All metal is a dark gray iron except for the buttplate which is brass.

The .58 barrel meas. approx. 25.00 inches long with a visible “VP” and eaglehead on left flat at breech. Barrel date is obliterated by pitting. Rear sight is two leaf and is attached by a sight screw as found on US weapons. Front sight is a blade sight with a ½ inch long base. Bore is very dirty and rifling is faint. It looks like a good cleaning will bring up more of the rifling. The barrel is attached to the stock by two flat barrel bands that have off center “U” stampings. Barrel is heavily pitted at breech. Nipple is original. Bolster has a heavily worn clean-out screw.

Lock plate is the “low hump” or Type III as classified by John M. Murphy in his “CONFEDERATE CARBINES & MUSKETOONS. Lockplate is marked “C.S. / RICHMOND” in two lines forward of the hammer and “1863” vertically behind the hammer. Both stampings are strong. Lock and hammer surface have patina to match the barrel. There is also some pitting on the upper portions of the lock near the bolster. Hammer holds at half and full-cock and falls properly when trigger is squeezed.

The stock is a Richmond made stock and is in overall good condition. The surface shows some light to moderate dings and scratches consistent with age and storage. Carved on the left side of the butt is the name “DAN” with a backwards “n” while the right side has a deep gouge that meas. approx. 1.75 inches long and approx. 0.08 of an inch deep. Screwed into the bottom edge of the butt behind the trigger guard is a sling swivel with another attached to the triggerguard and another below the forward barrel band. There is an old chip behind the lockplate with a crack extending rearward approx. 1.00 inch. This is a closed crack. Lockplate screws show some wear and the wood in this area has two deep parallel scratches and one horizontal. There is a small crack running from the top lockplate screw to the barrel.

The iron ramrod has a odd shaped tulip head and threads on the opposite end. The ramrod has a slight curve to it due to the top 2.50 inches having been crudely brazed. Ramrod channel has light chipping scattered along length.

A rare Confederate weapon in good overall condition. [ad]
