Invented and patented by a medical physician named Gilbert Smith of Buttermilk Falls, New York in late 1855, this is an original Civil War Smith carbine in superior condition used by Union forces during the Civil War. This single-shot, percussion carbine is a .50 caliber, breechloading weapon that measures 39” long overall and weighs a hefty seven pounds and eight ounces.

Excellent two-piece black walnut stock is made up of a 9” forearm held by a single barrel band. Black walnut stock retains its original feathered finish with just a few light dings and scratches. Left wrist has a strong cartouche. The 21 5/8” long octagonal / round shaped barrel surface still wears its original dark bluing with no rusting. Visible on left barrel facet near frame is a stamped letter “L. F. R.”. Barrel has original, brass blade front sight and folding rear sight. Frame housing is stamped with serial number “10040.”

Left side of breech opposite the hammer bears a crisp patent mark “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.” Directly underneath the sling bar is a sharp mark that reads “MANUFACTURED BY/ AMN M’CH’N WKS/SPRINGFIELD, MASS.”   Forward of this, and at a right angle to it, is another strong stamping that reads “SMITH’S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857.”

Frame exhibits excellent, strong case colors. Carbine exhibits sharp, crisp mechanics. Bore is bright and strong and immaculately clean. Screws are excellent. The first class condition of the bluing and case colors on this weapon cannot be overstressed.

The Smith carbine saw extensive service with the following volunteer cavalry regiments: 1st Connecticut, 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 7th and 17th PA, 7th and 11th Illinois and the 3rd West Virginia Regiments.  [ad]
