ORIGINAL 5TH MODEL BURNSIDE CARBINE

$1,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3668

Civil War 5th Model Burnside carbine produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. This .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is in good serviceable condition. It employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Weapon also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the triggerguard is activated which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.

Barrel has a plumb brown surface with the original front and rear sights. It is held to the forearm by a single iron band. Bore is clean with good rifling. There is a light “CAST STEEL” stamping forward of the rear sight.

Breech block and frame have a matching serial number of 15192. This area is also clearly stamped “BURNSIDE’S PATENT / MODEL OF 1864.” Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech. Breechblock and receiver have a moderately mottled surface.

Lockplate is faintly marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” Mechanics are strong and crisp. Original nipple is present and shows light wear. Numerous sub-inspector marks are visible on major components.

Black walnut stock is in good condition and has two strong cartouche marks on the left wrist area. The one closest to the receiver is partially obscured by a ding in the wood. Stock does exhibit shallow dings, dents and scuffs consistent with use and age.

Carbine is fitted with a sling bar and ring as well as a swivel on the toe of the stock. A good bit of the original blue finish remains on triggerguard.

A nice original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine that saw some use. [ad]
