The metallic cartridge, breech-loading 2nd Model Maynard carbine was the invention of Doctor Edward Maynard from New Jersey who patented his first model carbine in 1851. The U.S. Ordnance Dept contracted for over 20,000 2nd Model single shot, percussion, .50 caliber carbines which were produced by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee, Mass. Issued mostly to the Federal cavalry, the Maynard proved a lightweight, very serviceable and dependable arm that saw extensive service in the field.

This carbine carries serial #17058, has a 20.00 inch round barrel, no forend or comb, and measures a total length of 36.50 inches.

The barrel has a partial octagonal breech and retains almost all of the original blue finish with scattered spots of oxidation. Blade front sight and two leaf flip-up rear sight are present. Bore is excellent with good rifling.

Frame shows light case colors. Hammer retains much of its blue and the action works properly and is tight. Original nipple is present. All maker stampings on the obverse frame are clear and read, “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS” in three lines. Reverse side clearly stamped “EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC. 6, 1859” in four lines. Triggerguard and butt plate show only hints blue. Buttplate is almost showing all iron.Two of the four frame screw heads show wear.

Black walnut stock is in nice condition and has two strong government cartouche marks on the left side of the wrist. Carbine is fitted with a saddle bar and ring on the left side of the frame.

Serial number is on triggerguard tang.  [ad]
