Item Code: 1000-417

The .50 caliber barrel retains most of its original blue throughout and is free of pitting. Blue finish is thinning and turning a plumb brown. The iron blade front sight is mortised into the barrel above the muzzle. Rear sight is the single flip-up leaf with appture however the leaf is longer than the base and appears to be a replacement.  Left barrel flat at the breech is marked “L.F.R.” Bore is excellent but does have a small area of pitting near the muzzle.

Receiver retains faint case colors as does the hammer and bolster. Original nipple is present. Action is good and works properly. Left side of the receiver has good markings of “MANUFACTURED BY/ AMN M’CH’N WKS/SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” as well as “SMITH’S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857” and “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.” Bottom of receiver is marked with serial number 7670. Weapon properly breaks open for loading.

Two-piece black walnut stock with a 9” forearm held by a single barrel band. Forearm was replaced or reworked at some point. Color is not a perfect match to the butt and there are very small gaps where the wood meets the receiver. Also the nose of the forend has a little different shape than normal. Buttstock is no doubt original and bears a nice single inspector’s cartouche. There is a 2.00 inch long scratch running from the edge of the receiver to a point just below the cartouche.

Triggerguard and buttplate are dark. Saddle bar and ring are present. Screw heads show wear.

Weapon displays well.

The Smith carbine saw service with the following volunteer cavalry regiments: 1st Connecticut, 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 7th and 17th PA, 7th and 11th Illinois and the 3rd West Virginia Regiments.  [ad]
