BUCK & BALL AMMO CRATE MADE INTO CHESS/CHECKER BOARD

$2,250.00 SOLD

Item Code: 727-58

The outside measurements of this wooden crate are approx. 17.00 inches long x 13.50 inches wide x 7.50 inches high. The crate is nailed and not dovetailed. The exterior has been painted olive drab. Attached to each end are rectangular wood handles with a recess at center of the underside. The handles run the entire width of the crate. Stenciled above the handle on each end is “1000 BUCK & BALL” and below the handles are “CARTRIDGES MUSKET CAL .69 1861.” There is no lid on the crate and the interior is devoid of any markings or paint. When the crate is flipped over and resting with the bottom up there is a chess/checkerboard painted on the exposed surface. This board was made by cutting the lines of the squares with a knife and then blackening every other square and leaving the other plain wood.

The crate is in good condition. The corners and edges show wear and light to moderate chipping as is to be expected on an item of this age and subjected to hard use. There is also a closed crack on one side that runs approx. ¾ of the way across. The stenciling is readable on both ends with one end being a little brighter than the other. It appears as though the now missing lid was nailed rather than screwed in place.

This is really a great piece for not only the ammunition collector but also for those interested in camp life or soldier art.
