Here is a large, handsome martial powder flask made for a percussion pistol or longarm. The name of ‘Batty’ is widely known in flask history since his “Peace” flask product enjoyed the longest run of manufacture of this type flask, covering 1847 to 1858. This fine condition ‘Batty’ flask from the Mexican War era exhibits the conventional tear-shaped copper body that bears a military motif design. Device measures 9” long and has a 4” wide swell. Constructed of copper, flask is equipped with a plain screw-off flask top, brass collar, adjustable charger, thumb-piece cutter and loading rim. Stampings are strong and clear on the top of the flask and exhibit “BATTY” / 1847.” Government inspector marks “ADK” on the brim. Seams are strong and show no evidence of splitting or repairs. Top spring of the charging mechanism is strong and not broken as often encountered.

Flask decorated with a military design that shows a spread-winged eagle facing to his left perched upon arrows and olive branches. Below this is a pair of clasped hands surrounded by an embossed oval of twenty stars. Directly below the stars is the military motif in panoply of flags, cannon, muskets and trumpets, all under a large shield device embossed with the letters “U S.” Two, small, brass triangle swivel rings are attached to each side of the flask’s upper neck. Attached to both rings is a length of dark green cording that has frayed in areas. A dark, rich bronze patina envelopes the entire flask body and presents a pleasing and handsome appearance. Flask body has one mild depression below the shield to the right and shows just the normal amount of tiny dings from use and storage. A fine martial ‘Batty’ Peace powder flask in excellent condition.
