From the well-known collection of author Dean Thomas comes this wooden crate meas. approx. 21.00 in. long x 10.25 in. wide x 7.00 in. tall. The crate is nailed and is still holding together well despite its age. The outside surface is painted olive drab and exhibits average wear. Each end piece has a recessed cut for use as a handle. One end panel is missing the upper third part of the board. This same piece has some separations at one side seam from warping of the wood. A third of the lid still remains being screwed in place to the crate.

Both sidepieces are stenciled “MANUFACTURED BY C. D. LEET, SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” This wording is done in 5 lines with letters approx. 0.50 to 0.75 of an inch high. On one side this stenciling is worn yet still very readable. On the opposite side it is somewhat faded. This side also has what appears to be a shipping destination in red lettering but it is difficult to read.

Both end pieces are clearly stenciled with “1008” between the handle and the top edge. Below the handle the stenciling reads “METALLIC PRIMED CARTRIDGES FOR SPENCER CARBINE, CAL. .50 MODEL 1865.” Again, this lettering is approx. 0.75 inch in height. The end with the missing piece is lacking only the number “1008.” The remaining section of the lid also has some stenciling on it but it is too worn to read and is not complete. Finally, the wood of which the crate is made is still sturdy and solid. There are some cracks from age and storage. The most severe is a horizontal crack running almost the length of one side. This is a closed crack and should not get any worse. There is also some minor wood loss on the bottom in the area of the nail heads.  [ad]
