Sharps carbines and rifles were equipped with a pellet primer system intended to obviate the need for percussion caps. This small brass tube holds a number of flat disk primers. It was seated in a slot underneath the hammer and the primers were fed forward onto the nipple as the hammer fell in order ignite the cartridge. The soldier could also use conventional percussion caps if necessary. This is a scarce example of a pellet primer tube that would supplement a Sharps carbine or rifle and display well among a soldier’s necessary equipment. [sr]
