This is the paper and foil cartridge manufactured under Poultney’s patent.  The patent (#40,988 dated December 15, 1863) was originally granted to Thomas Rodman and Silas Crispin who assigned it to Thomas Poultney.  The cases were made of brass foil and paper with a perforation in the base.

This Gallager cartridge is sectioned from the wad under the bullet to the end. Foil, paper, gun powder, wad and bullet are all visible. A perfect display piece.  [jet]
