Presented here is an original, seldom seen, patent ignition, annular rimfire round referred to as a ‘Crispin’ metallic cartridge in excellent condition. Much sought after, this unique round measures a total length of 2”, has a conical, flat top lead bullet and exhibits a copper case with the annular rim ½” up from the base. The ‘Crispin’ cartridge, patented in August of 1865 by Silas Crispin, had its fulminate charge contained in the annular rim. This odd but picturesque .50 caliber metallic round was used in special models of the Smith’s breech loading carbines. Hard to find and not dented or dinged, this fine .50 cal ‘Crispin’ wears a pleasing bronze patina and would enhance any collection of early military ammunition.
