Item Code: 31-1518

Here is an original, Fourth Model version of the popular 1851 Colt Navy Revolver in excellent condition. One of the most sought after models ever produced by Samuel Colt’s firm in Hartford, Connecticut was the Colt Navy pistol, a premier medium caliber handgun. Sam Colt designated the term ‘Navy’ to imply the caliber (.36) of the weapon, and later used the term ‘Army’ for its heavier .44 caliber companion, the Colt Model 1860 Army.

Manufactured sometime in the 1st quarter of 1865, this weapon is a fine example of a personal sidearm used before and during the American Civil War. This M1851 Navy bears matching serial number #182482 marked on all its components (barrel, frame, triggerguard, cylinder, loading lever, buttplate, wedge and on the spline. With a .36 caliber, six-shot capacity cylinder, this model cap and ball percussion specimen was one of the 215,000 Colt ‘Navy’ sidearms made through 1873. The revolver features an octagonal 7½” long barrel with attached loading lever. Barrel enjoys sharp edges and holds a deep and strong maker address marking that reads “ADDRESS COL. SAM’L COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA.” Mechanics are tight with strong half cock and full cock positions and crisp indexing.

Cylinder, with normal wear, bears an unusually sharp and very clear, roll-engraved naval engagement scene between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy. Cylinder appears to have been very lightly cleaned, has a gray patina with engraving distinct enough that its upper edge marking “ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843” is clear. All cylinder pins are hammered down as normally found and the six original nipples are strong. Octagonal barrel with its attached loading lever exhibits traces of original bluing. “COLTS PATENT” stamp on the left of frame appears to be a factory double-hit. Original frame screws not buggered. The original, one-piece varnished walnut grips are in excellent condition and bear two no military inspector cartouches. Sidearm bears no evidence of silver wash on the large round brass trigger guard. Left side of the brass corner back strap shows the stamped letters “A. L. IDE” while the bottom of the buttstrap bears the name “W. Ewing” hand scratched into the strap. No research done on either name. Exterior surface of all gunmetal exhibits a medium gray coloring with scattered patches of light peppering overall. A very good Colt Navy revolver.
