Item Code: G3178

This cap and ball percussion handgun, in excellent overall condition, is a rare Civil War era Remington revolver known as the “Old Model Army”. These sidearms were in production in 1862 only and Remington produced just 6,000 of these units. The Union government acquired the total of these revolvers for military use. This early production original revolver is a government sub-inspector-marked sidearm in .44 caliber with a 6-shot round unrebated cylinder matched to an 8” long octagonal barrel. Differences in the early manufactured sidearms employed the Beals system frame that concealed the threads for the screw on barrel at the frame breech adjacent to the cylinder.

Grips are original two-piece walnut in very good condition with one government inspector cartouche visible on the left grip. Inside each grip is a previous owner’s ID # written in pencil. Both grips tight with no shrinkage. The early four-digit serial number (#6213) is deeply stamped into the bottom facet of the barrel above the loading lever. Frame is also clearly stamped with #6213. This revolver is equipped with its original cylinder bearing serial # 6213 and it is also inspector marked. Serial numbering starting at the end of the Beals Army production run. Cylinder is plain and shows wear and cleaning. Original nipples intact.

No original bluing or case colors left on the frame, hammer or lever. Hammer is the high-spur version. Loading lever has the channel cut along the top portion. All gunmetal has been cleaned at one time and wears a mellow dusky medium gray finish. Has very light pitting in spots on the barrel, hard to see. Sidearm features a brass trigger guard, steel backstrap and the low hammer spur. Buttplate exhibits two light hand carved initials “R B”. Two line barrel marking complete but thin on the upper line reads “PATENTED DEC 17, 1861 / MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS’ ILION. N. Y.” Revolver mechanics crisp. This seldom seen Remington 1861 Old Model Army revolver is a very fine representative sidearm of the Civil War.
