REPRESENTATIVE CIVIL WAR THREE-SCREW COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER

$1,350.00 SOLD

Item Code: 172-2907

This cap and ball percussion sidearm is a Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in good overall condition. These sidearms were in production from 1860 through 1873 and were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Colt Army revolver was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.  This government sidearm is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder, an 8” long barrel and mis-matched serial numbers. The five-digit number (#81017) appears on the barrel and cylinder while the frame, trigger guard, buttstrap, and spline show (# 48879). Wedge is an original replacement and has no number.  Loading lever appears to be a replacement. Front sight on barrel is a modern replacement.

Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition save for a corner chip (1” high) of the inside left grip has been lost. No visible inspector’s cartouche. All gunmetal exhibits old cleaning and wears a medium gray finish with scattered spots of oxidation and light pitting overall. No original case colors. Cylinder bears a very thin cylinder scene. Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and a small notch in the backstop indicating a martial arm. Barrel address is thin and reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK AMERICA”. The revolver mechanics are crisp and shows strong indexing. “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame pitted but visible. Screws not buggered.  This late 1863 war production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver is a good representative Civil War sidearm.
