Item Code: 30-1789

This cap and ball percussion sidearm is a complete Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in fine condition. These handguns were in production from 1860 through 1873 and were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Colt Army revolver was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.

Government-inspected, this sidearm is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and the 8” long barrel. Grips are original one-piece walnut in very good condition and exhibit two clear government inspector’s cartouches. Right side grip does have a large (1/2” long wedge) missing from the inside bottom corner. All gunmetal exhibits a pleasing dusky gray finish with scattered spots of dark oxidation overall.  No original case colors or bluing remain on the sidearm. Revolver has matching serial numbers #55110 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, wedge, and spline. Serial # dates the manufacture in the 2rd quarter of 1862.

Pistol is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and a small notch on the butt plate indicating a martial arm. Mechanics are excellent. Barrel address is clear and sharp; reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Cylinder scene in very good plus condition as is the “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame. All nipples fine, not broken. Safeties are hammered down.  Barrel, cylinder, triggerguard, and grips all show sub-inspector stampings. Original frame screws are in very good condition, not buggered.

This classic early war production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver is a fine and complete representative sidearm of the Civil War.
