ALLEN DRAGOON PEPPERBOX –“49ER.”

$1,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4078

This .36 caliber, six shot pepperbox was produced by Allen & Thurber. Flayderman refers to it as the “standard Worcester” production. The weapon has a 5 ¼” barrel with a bar hammer and large triggerguard with spur and engraved nipple shield and frame.

All metal surfaces are gray with light scattered mottling. Ribbed barrel bears faint marks that read “ALLEN & THURBER WORCESTER / PATENTED 18(??).” All nipples are the original and are in good condition with moderate dirt.

Nipple shield and frame have wide scrollwork engraving that is still strong. Left side of hammer bar is marked “ALLEN’S PATENT” but the marking is somewhat obscured by surface pitting.

Wood grips are original condition with all the varnish and no cracks.

Weapon operates properly.

Flayderman goes on to say of these Dragoon pepperboxes that they “are termed by collectors ’49 ers’ as so many of them are known to have been carried by those heading west in the earlier years of the Gold Rush.”
