NICE COLT 1851 NAVY REVOLVER

$3,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 801-130

One of the most popular pistols ever produced by Samuel Colt’s firm in Hartford, Connecticut was the 1851 Navy model considered at the time as a premier medium caliber handgun. As a six-shot, .36 caliber, percussion revolver, this specimen was one of over 215,000 such sidearms made.

Manufactured in 1854, this complete Model 1851 Navy revolver bears serial number #36894 which matches throughout the piece. Revolver features an un-rebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long octagonal barrel. Barrel retains approx. 80% of the original blue with sharp edges throughout. Barrel marking is crisp and reads “-ADDRESS SAMUL. COLT NEW-YORK CITY-“ Bore is dark and needs cleaning but has great rifling. Below the barrel the area around the wedge pin shows numerous minor dings. Loading lever under the barrel operates properly and shows some original colors.

Cylinder has a well done and completely visible naval battle scene. Surface is gray All nipples are present at rear of cylinder and original. Stops are worn. Cylinder indexes properly and is tight at full-cock. Hammer and frame show small amounts of case colors. Hammer stops at half-cock but does not hold. Holds at full-cock and falls properly. Stamping of “COLT’S PATENT” on left front of frame is good. Screw heads show light wear.

Walnut grips show varnish but are moderately scratched on the sides with heavy pounding marks on bottom. No cartouches are visible.

Approx. 30%- 40% of the silver wash remains on the small rounded brass trigger guard. Backstrap showing mostly brass with some silver at top.

This a wonderful example of a Colt Navy that saw use but yet still retains approx. 40% of its overall original finish and 100% of the cylinder scene with all matching numbers.    [ad]
