1860 ARMY COLT — 1st MODEL RICHARDS CONVERSION, S/N “192377” [1871]

$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 31-1566

This is an 1860 .44 Colt centerfire revolver, with 6-shot rebated cylinder and round 8” barrel. Has an ejector rod attached, with loading lever removed and barrel lug plugged. Standard 1860 Army grips and finish. Its conversion breech plate has the telltale Richards rear sight and rim that projects over the breech end of cylinder. Barrel and metalwork exhibit mottled plum colored patina with light scattered pitting. Outer serial numbers match, with last four numbers visible on the cylinder, which is otherwise worn smooth. Period replacement wedge. Walnut grips display medium dings and scars customary with age and usage; left grip lightly chipped at lower left corner. Conversion breech-plate crisp and functional. Sharp cylinder indexing, strong action. Bore lightly pitted. Else good plus. 9,000 Colt underwent the Richards conversion between 1871-78, and the Richards’ was considered a much more practical conversion than the earlier Thuer conversion. A popular early metallic cartridge revolver for Colt collectors who like the heft of a ’60 Army alongside their 1873 forty-five “Peacemaker.” Semi-scarce, a solid collectible. [jp]
