This is a .36 caliber revolver complete with its leather holster and waist belt.

All gun metal has a dark brown patina. The trigger guard is made of brass and the grips are walnut. The serial number (1404) is stamped on the barrel under the loading lever. This may be a transitional piece as it has features of Whitney’s first and second models.  Octagonal barrel is marked on top: “E. WHITNEY / N.HAVEN.  Loading lever is the ball type end. The cylinder retains very little of the rolled image. One of the six original nipples is chipped. The cylinder is the type with only one safety notch on the back. The mechanics of the gun are good. Wood grips are type with round top at junction with frame.  They show wear and the left side has a hairline crack, otherwise good.

Holster and belt remain supple and show matching heavy wear to surface finish.  Holster remains complete with latch tab, brass finial, nose cap, and wide belt loop.  Stitching remains unbroken. A very nice holster with visible “imprint” of the revolver.   The waist belt features a N.C.O. eagle buckle with applied German silver wreath.  Belt shows heavy surface wear but remains strong.  There is a floating belt loop and wire buckle to adjust waist size.

Even though the pieces show honest age and use, it is still a very good original set. The Whitney is one of the early competitors to Colt and was very popular during the Civil War with most of its production going to the government.  [jet]
