This is a Smith & Wesson, No. 2, Old Model Army Revolver. It is a .32 caliber, six-shot revolver with a 6” barrel, rosewood handles; no plating at all just a gun metal. Gray patina having been cleaned years ago. Serial number 7541 dates this to early-Civil War production.
All gun metal is plated and in fairly good condition; semi-bright with scattered patches of darker tarnish and a few small areas of light pitting. Clearly stamped on the top of the barrel is: “SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” Bore is dark and dirty. Mechanics are strong.
Rosewood grips retain an attractive dark patina. Small chips are found on right side at bottom edge.
A solid example of a personal sidearm that was popular with Civil War soldiers. [jet]
