Item Code: 862-05

This is a very nice Model 1851 Colt Navy revolver. It is a .36 caliber revolver with six-shot cylinder, a 7 ½” octagonal barrel with attached loading lever, and brass frame with round trigger guard. Serial numbers for this “Third” model began at 4200 and ended around number 85000. This specimen is serial number 68666 which was manufactured in early-1857.

The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY” and the left side of the frame is marked “COLTS / PATENT / U.S.”  The cylinder features the complete engraved cylinder scene of a battle between the Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy, and is also marked COLTS PATENT and the complete serial number. All cones are in good shape. Safety pins are in mostly hammered down. The grip straps are brass with plating left. The original grips are one-piece walnut with inspector’s cartouches on both sides; one clear and one very worn.

Colt stamped the serial number on the barrel, frame, cylinder, loading lever, trigger guard, back strap, and wedge and they all match.  Many parts stamped with “S” and other sub-inspector’s marks. Mechanics are sharp and very strong.  Gun metal has a nice dark pewter patina with scattered, very fine surface oxidation. Brass has an even, dull yellow patina.  Wood shows some minor dings on the butt.

An original and complete martially marked model 1851 Colt revolver in very good condition.  [jet]
