This cap and ball percussion sidearm is an original Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in very good overall condition. These sidearms were in production from 1860 through 1873 and were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Colt Army revolver was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict. This government inspected sidearm is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and a 7½” long barrel. Grips are original one-piece unvarnished walnut in good condition with two government inspector cartouches visible. Grips show scattered scuffing near the top edge with one tiny chip at the lower left corner and a larger chip (1/8 to ¼”) at the lower right corner.

All gun metal has been cleaned and exhibits a pleasing salt and pepper, light gray sheen with scattered spots of dark oxidation overall.  No original case colors.  Sidearm has a brass trigger guard, steel backstrap as normal and all matching numbers # 70694 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, wedge, spline and cylinder which bears the last four digits 0694.  Cylinder roll engraved scene retains about 60-70%. Revolver produced probably 3rd or 4th quarter of 1862. This military sidearm has the recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch in the backstop made for the shoulder stock attachment. Barrel address is clear and reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK AMERICA”. Mechanics are strong and crisp. “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame is clear.  This early-war production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver is a great representative sidearm of the Civil War.
