The Harpers Ferry Armory manufactured around 105,000 muskets between 1844 and 1855. It is a .69 caliber single shot muzzleloader with a 42-inch barrel. All mountings are iron and have a dusky peppery gunmetal gray finish with areas of pitting near the nipple. The lockplate is marked with an American eagle motif over U.S., and behind the hammer marked vertically are HARPERS FERRY and the date 1848. The breech of the barrel is marked VP / eaglehead but no date is visible due to pitting. Stock is walnut and has a dark finish. Some wood is missing just below the nosecap. Inspector’s cartouche stamped on the left side of the stock is very faint. Ramrod is original. Bore is dark with some pitting.  The Model 42 is the last smoothbore .69 caliber weapon made at both armories with fully interchangeable parts.
