Cal. 58 “Springfield” produced by Springfield Armory. Model 1863 Type one muskets are easily identified by the lack of barrel band retaining springs. The lock surface is gray-bright with a slight dusty look. Markings “Eagle” with” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date “1864”remain legible. Crisp working lockworks. All other iron surfaces are also dusty gray with areas of heavy pitting near the nipple. The barrel markings are “VP over “Eagle” is just barely visible and the date is not visible. The single leaf rear sight is complete and functional. The ramrod is original. Bore has very good rifling and a semi- bright finish. The stock is a light patina, has some nicks and gouges and has been lightly sanded. The inspector’s cartouches are located on the opposite side of the lockplate and are present. The Model ‘63” Springfield had a total quantity of 255,040 produced. This model was the last U.S. martial regulation arm of muzzle-loading design.
