M1861 U.S. SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1862

$2,595.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-420

This longarm specimen is a .58 caliber Model 1861 percussion rifle-musket dated 1862 in very good condition. Produced by the Federal armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, the musket retains its original stock, nipple and bolster screw, swell-shank ramrod, barrel bands, swivel sling hooks and triggerguard. Interestingly, an original M1855 iron patch box has been imbedded in the right shoulder of the stock likely executed by a previous owner some time ago. Nicely done.

All gunmetal has been cleaned and exhibits a mottled salt and pepper barrel surface overall. Lock plate, hammer butt plate and patchbox also cleaned to a light gray sheen. Lock plate stamped with “U. S. / SPRINGFIELD” and a spreadwinged eagle motif in front of the “C”-shaped hammer. Date “1862” strongly stamped behind hammer. Top flat of breech shows the date stamp “1862.” Breech bolster has the original nipple and is lightly pitted. All screws good, not buggered up. Proof marks are all strong. Mechanics crisp.

Black walnut stock is original with no cracks or repairs. Exhibits normal dings and dents from use and storage. Two very light government cartouches visible on the left flat opposite the hammer. Stock, in very good condition overall, has not been cleaned but shows nice wear on the flat’s edges. Swelled shank steel ramrod is original and retains its threaded tip. Musket has the standard two leaf rear sight and all barrel bands stamped “U” aligned on their band spring. A very nice veteran Model 1861 Springfield rifle musket dated 1862.
