51,389 Model 1868 Springfields were manufactured from 1866 to 1872.  They are chambered for the 50 centerfire cartridge.  The breechblock pivoted forward when released by a thumb latch, which was designed by Allin and used on his conversions. The 32 ½ inch barrel is secured by two bands. Rear sight is a long range type with an adjustable slide. Iron parts are finished bright Stocks are walnut and the lockplate is Civil War. Serial number is on the left side of the barrel.  Lock markings of eagle and U.S/Springfield forward of the hammer and either dated 1863 or 1864 at the rear. Breechblock is marked the year of manufacture over a small eagle head, crossed arrows and U.S.

This particular Model 1868 is serial number 29689. All iron parts are a dusky brown patina. It does have surface rust on the buttplate. Stock has dings and gouges from normal wear but has no cracks. One area has a chip missing near the buttplate tang. Bore is good and is bright. Lockplate works fine but the firing pin does occasionally hangs up. Date on lockplate is 1864.
