This original Civil War artifact is a .58 caliber percussion rifled musket manufactured in 1861 by the Philadelphia firm of P. S. Justice. In very good overall condition, this longarm is one of almost 2,500 muskets contracted by P. S. Justice early in the war to meet the needs of the Union army and his deliveries were among the fastest from any American arms producer during the war.

This single-shot muzzleloader has three-groove rifling, brass mountings including a patchbox and brass barrel bands, no barrel springs and the distinctive double-curved brass triggerguard. Round barrel measures 35” long and is fitted to a black walnut one piece stock. Barrel has the two-piece rear leaf sight and a steel blade front sight. Excellent bore and bright. Barrel surface has a bright patina with vice marks on the barrel. Barrel and the lock plate shows “P. S. JUSTICE / PHILADA” on the lock plate face in front of the hammer and on the barrel near the nipple. Number P132 is stamped on the barrel tang. Lock plate is a bright patina, as is the high-spur hammer and nipple bolster. Mechanics are strong. Other iron components consistent in patina, including the ramrod. No cartouches. Black walnut stock surface is dark and appears uncleaned with a consistent patina overall. Wood stock shows some surface scratches, scuff marks along with minor dings and nicks.
