This is a Springfield manufactured musket that was originally a 69 caliber flintlock and later converted to a percussion musket. The lockplate is marked “SPRINGFIELD / 1833” vertically behind the hammer and forward of the hammer is an American eagle motif above “US”. The mechanics of the lock is crisp. The barrel is marked at the breech “P”, eagle and “V”. The bore is dark with spots of pitting. All other iron parts are a mixed gray / dusky semi-bright patina with various sub-inspector marks. The wood is walnut with honest age and use. Nice strong cartouches visible on the stock.
The conversion is the “Cone Type” or what was officially called the “Belgian alteration”. This is the second style of converting these arms and was used in early 1850’s. From existing records this method is the only one performed by National Armories.
