Produced by the Springfield Armory, this Model 1888 ‘Trapdoor’, .45 caliber, breechloading, centerfire rifle is one of 65,000 made from 1889 through 1893. Barrel has government proof marks on the left facet with “V / P / eagle’s head”. Lockplate stamped with the spreadwinged eagle with “US / SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer. Breechblock inscription reads “US / MODEL / 1884”. Featured on the Model 1888 trapdoor is the later style ‘Buffington’ rear sight, an adjustable leaf style device to adjust for elevation and windage.

On this particular example, the walnut stock exhibits a rich, dark patina. Cartouche is stamped on the left side behind the lockplate screws and shows the inspector’s initials and date (1893). All mountings are a gun metal gray patina including the stacking swivels at the upper band and the sling swivel at the triggerguard. Rifle retains its regulation front sight blade and its ramrod - bayonet. Bore is good and is semi-bright. Serial number is 562896 and is one of the last big caliber, black powder, single shot firearms.
