Superb example of the Springfield Model 1861 rifle musket dated 1862, second year of production. This specimen exhibits a full 40” barrel complete with the matching date of 1862 located on the breech tang and lock plate. The barrel proof mark of the eagles head over VP is also present. All metallic components appear to be original to this weapon. At some period in its history the stock and metal surfaces have been professionally cleaned, but not overly cleaned. The overall condition of the stock shows very little dents or scratches. Strong contours around the wood edges of the lock mortis are still present. No visible inspector’s marks on the stock (opposite the lock) have survived. All metallic parts are cleaned bright with various patches of scattered very fine pitting on the lock plate and along the barrel surface. As for the mechanics, the lock still has a perfect crisp action in both half cock and full cock positions. The bore is strong and bright with deep rifling. A well above average Civil War infantry weapon.
