Item Code: G3036

This post-war single-shot breechloader is a .50 caliber centerfire Cadet Model 1867 rifle produced by the Springfield Armory. In very good plus condition, this longarm is a scaled down, cadet size version of the M1866 Allin conversion ‘trapdoor’ rifle and is one of a total of only 424 units produced by the government arsenal. It measures a total of 47½” long, has a 33” long rifled barrel and a proportionately shortened stock. Breechblock has remnants of original blackened finish and the underside exhibits two deeply arched cut-outs at each side leaving a narrow flat-topped ridge in the center. Lockplate was produced for this type rifle and is a bit thinner in width from the older plate. Lockplate stampings very sharp, clear and exhibits a detailed spreadwinged eagle in front of hammer, and the date “1867” clearly stamped behind hammer.

Hammer screw shows faint traces of original case-colors. Barrel, with its three-groove rifling, is secured to the stock with two oval barrel bands and two band springs, all finished factory bright. All gunmetal exhibits a bright sheen. Has just few tiny spots of fine rust pitting, mostly on the ramrod. Beveled lockplate is fitted with an S-shaped hammer. Screws not buggered up. Rifle has the regular rear sight and an iron blade front sight. Longarm has no swivels. No proof marks on barrel. Bore is strong and shiny bright. The steel, knurled, slotted head ramrod is original, 30” long and retains its threaded tip. The full black walnut stock is solid with no cracks or splits. Stock surface has been cleaned and refurbished. Flat retains no sharp edges or cartouches. A fine, seldom-seen, Model 1867 Springfield Cadet rifle.
