Item Code: 379-08

This Model 1816 Springfield .69 caliber smoothbore musket was re-converted from percussion back to flintlock. The original, single-shot musket is in very good condition overall. Its 42” barrel surface has moderate light pitting with a mottled salt & pepper look overall. Three iron bands with three iron springs secure barrel to the full stock. Bore is dark and shows scattered rust pitting and surface grime. No rear sight. A small, brass blade-shaped front sight is mounted on the barrel’s double upper band. Barrel bolster area shows heavy cleaning in front of touch hole and flash pan. Barrel breech has light pitting and proofmarks “V / P / eaglehead” on left facet. Barrel tang dated “1843” strong and clear. The lockplate is marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1842” behind the flat sided hammer. Forward end of the flat lockplate is beveled while the rear or tail section is rounded to a point. Jaw has an original flint. Plate metal has a medium gray coloring with scattered dark areas of oxidation. Al other metal wears a pleasing light gray patina.

Dark black walnut stock has been lightly cleaned at one time and has darkened to a mellow hue overall with just few scuffs and dents to the wood. Visible on the stock flat is a single government cartouche. Flat edges are still sharp, nor rounded over. The side plate bears a sub-inspector’s mark “s” and the two lock screws are clean and not buggered. Has its original trumpet-head ramrod. Has both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one at the triggerguard. This musket is a nice representative Springfield M1816 musket alteration back to flint from percussion.
