Item Code: 362-544

2,000 of these rifled muskets produced at Liege, Belgium in the mid-19th century. Musket 56” in overall length. Has a 40½” long round barrel with a .69 caliber bore. Bore is in mint condition. The Piedmontese Model 1844 / 60 was the first percussion musket to be adopted by the Kingdom of Piedmont. Designed as a percussion musket, it retained an older form of flint-type lockplate which was flush and pointed at the left end, and with raised beveled edges on the right side. In 1860, the barrel was rifled with four lands and grooves to use a Minie-type bullet, explaining the hyphenated model number arrangement.

Weapon was produced in Liege, Belgium and features a number of Belgium proof marks on barrel. Also, the stock has deep, circular ink stamping on side of stock of “A. Francotte -Liege.” This rifle is a copy of the French Model 1822 infantry musket with the distinctive features of a small knob on the hammer spur and a rear sight screwed to the breech area.

Musket in very good condition overall. All gunmetal has been lightly cleaned and it shows no case or coloring. Barrel fitted to stock via three barrel bands with three barrel springs. All iron furniture including the butt plate, triggerguard, bands, springs, swivels and ramrod. The attractive stock features distinctive graining effects. Wood has not been cleaned and bears a number of dings and dents, in addition to a 1½” long sliver of wood missing near the upper barrel band on right side. Original trumpet head ramrod is in excellent condition.

A fine Piedmontese Model 1844 / 60 rifled musket.
