This artifact is a muzzle loading, single shot, percussion firearm that was altered from flintlock to percussion and likely used by one of the New England militia units of the period. With its large .70 caliber smoothbore barrel, the longarm measures a total of 57¾” long with a 42½” long round barrel. Bore is clean with light to moderate pitting and oxidation. The fine, tigerwood maple full stock measures 53½” long and is secured to the barrel via some ten small pins or keys. Shoulder stock has a distinct, sharp pointed comb. Stock at the barrel tang has been nicely carved and features a burst of rays onto the wrist. A 1” long, brass oval medallion is embedded in top wrist and may have had engravings cut in but now hard to discern.

All furniture mountings are brass which includes the butt plate, triggerguard, sideplate, four ramrod tubes, and the nose cap. Has two sling swivels, one sits at the trigger bow and the other swivel at the second tube. Stock wears a mellow patina overall with just slight scuffs and dents. No patch box. Stock flat edges are rounded. Original lockplate is 5¾” long, almost flush to the stock with a teat at the left edge and a slight rise on the right side. A ‘barrel bolster’ alteration is set into top of lockplate. Plate exhibits no maker’s name but has two engraved, plain floral motifs, in front and in back of the hammer. Hammer is flat sided and shows two raised marks on flat, “G” and “4.” Mechanics are strong but could use some lube.

The long barrel wears a dark gray patina with mottled salt and pepper rust pitting its entire overall surface. A small brass front sight is fit into barrel 4½” from muzzle tip. Musket retains its straight-shank, steel, button head ramrod with a worn, crudely threaded tip. The iron bayonet is of the M1816 pattern, measures a total of 16½ long with a 3 1/8” long socket and a wide angular blade 12½” long. No stampings are visible. A fine, altered to percussion, New England militia musket with its original bayonet.
