This specimen is an original Harper’s Ferry Model 1842, .69 caliber, single-shot, smoothbore muzzleloader in good original condition. Longarm is partially identified via small block letter stampings “L. C. HILL / JOHNSTOWN” located directly behind the triggerguard tang. No research on Hill at this time. All gunmetal appears to have been cleaned. Lockplate surface shows a dusky gray coloring. Lockplate markings are the standard “spreadwinged Eagle / small US” forward of the hammer and “HARPERS / FERRY / 1851” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Maker’s mark stampings is easily readable, save for the second “R” in Ferry which is extremely light. But the eagle motif shows only traces of the stamp without the “US” due to locally heavy pitting and pocking. Normal light rust pitting around the bolster area. Lockplate screws not buggered up. Mechanics are strong and crisp.

42” long barrel exhibits a brown plum patina. Proofmarks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are clear on the barrel breech as is the “1851” date stamped on the barrel tang. Barrel also exhibits the small Harper’s Ferry mark “A R / P” forward of the proofmarks. Musket also retains its brass blade sight on the upper barrel band. The bayo lug mounted on underside of barrel. No front sight. Bore is lightly dusty with scattered areas of rust pitting that should clean to semi-bright. All the other iron components are consistent in patina and color. A clear “U_” is stamped onto the butt plate tang. Black walnut stock is in good condition and exhibits light refinishing with some dings and scuffmarks. Strong numeric stamp “4” visible on left flat near sideplate. Musket retains original ‘trumpet’ type steel ramrod with its threaded tip intact.
