HARPERS FERRY M1842 SMOOTHBORE MUSKET, DATED 1846

$975.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3369

An original Harper’s Ferry Model 1842, .69 caliber, single-shot, smoothbore muzzleloader in fair to good overall condition. Musket’s lock wears a medium dark gray color that exhibits a lightly pitted surface. Standard lock markings forward of the hammer are completely worn away while just traces of the three-line maker address, back of the hammer, show the “HARPERS / FERRY / 1846” arrangement. Mechanics are strong. Moderate to heavy old rust pitting around the barrel breech, hammer and bolster area. Round barrel measures 42” long and has the bayo lug underneath the muzzle area. Barrel secured to stock via three iron bands. Longarm retains its two sling swivels, one at the triggerguard and the second one at the middle barrel band. Barrel surface wears a dark, mottled salt and pepper patina with a mild sheen. Proofmarks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are clear on the left barrel facet but very thin. No date visible on the barrel tang.

Musket retains its worn down, brass blade sight on the upper barrel band and no rear sight as normal. Lockplate screws not buggered up. Bore is rust pitted and dark with oxidation. All the other iron components are consistent in patina and color. No government cartouches visible on flat. Left shoulder stock area exhibits stampings “J. W. WAIT” in two locations along with a 1” high, hand carved letter “W”. “US” is stamped onto the rusted butt plate tang. Black walnut stock is in fair to good original condition with no repairs. Does appears to have been refinished at one time but now exhibits normal light dings and scuffmarks. Musket retains its original ‘trumpet’ type steel ramrod but the threaded tip has been buggered.

A well-used, veteran M1842 Harper’s Ferry smoothbore musket dated 1846.
