Item Code: 362-699

This original Civil War longarm is a .58 caliber “S. Norris & W.T. Clement” contract Model 1863, single-shot muzzleloader in fair to good overall condition. The contract musket was a product of the Samuel Norris and W.T. Clement factory of Springfield, Massachusetts. Some three thousand longarms were produced by the firm directly for the State of Massachusetts during the years of 1863 and 1864.

All gunmetal has been nickel plated with the surface now exhibiting a partially flaking light gray finish. Lockplate markings in front of hammer show the “eagle / US” and “S.N. & W.T.C.” / for / MASSACHUSETTS” beneath bolster. Markings sharp and clear. Behind the hammer is the date “1864”. The “S” shaped hammer, with its beveled contours, wears the same coloring as the rest of the components. Proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are thinly stamped on the barrel facet. Inspector initials “L F R” visible on left facet. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Bore is pitted and rifling fair. Steel tulip shaped ramrod is original and in good condition.

Butt tang is marked “US”. Two, light, inspector cartouches are visible on the flat of the stock. Other visible markings include remnants of two painted numerals on left side of stock. Dark, black walnut stock surface is uncleaned and exhibits a number of scratches and scuff marks overall along with minor dings and nicks. Accompanying M1855 angular socket bayonet in good overall condition but also has been nickel plated. Has a strong stamp “U S” on the blade flat. A veteran M1863 contract rifled musket by Norris & Clement.
