This original, 1862-dated Model 1861 .58 caliber “Mason Contract” percussion rifle-musket is in good, complete condition overall. This rifle musket was a product of the William Mason Company of Taunton, Massachusetts. The firm produced some 30,000 weapons for the army.
This single-shot muzzleloader retains an untouched appearance with all gun metal surfaces being dark. Barrel exhibits a pleasing plumb patina overall. Bore is dark but rifling is good. There appears to be a small spot of rust or pitting approx. halfway down the barrel.
Musket retains its original stock, iron nipple and bolster screw, “dog ear” shaped hammer, swell-shaped ramrod, all barrel bands and sling swivels. Breech near the nipple and bolster area reflects very light pitting. Black walnut stock is in good condition overall but it does have some scratches and small chips scattered over its length. No government cartouches are visible on the wood.
Butt plate marked with “U.S.” Lockplate has heavy dark mottling and is stamped with “U.S. / WM. MASON / TAUNTON.” under the bolster and “1862” behind the hammer. All stampings including the eagle motif are good. Barrel breech area stamped “1863” on the top flat. Government proof marks “V.P.” with eagle head are NOT present. Mechanics are strong. This musket retains its original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod with its threaded tip.
