This weapon was made by the Sharps Rifle Company from 1878-1881 with a total production of approx. 8,700. The weapon came in varying styles such as carbine, hunting and sporting. The weapon offered here is the full stock rifle.

Overall the rifle meas. approx. 48.50 inches long with a round barrel that meas. approx. 32.08 inches long. The barrel retains much of its original blue. Rear sight is flip-up leaf with slider that can be adjusted for distance on a stepped rail. The barrel is marked between the rear sight and the breech with “OLD RELIABLE” in cursive and “SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN.” Caliber is .45. Bore is very clean while rifling is light.

Frame is case hardened but has darkened with age. Strongly stamped on left side of the frame in three lines is “BORCHARDT PATENT/ SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN. / U.S.A.” Pulling the triggerguard lever will drop the breechblock for loading. Action operates well. Top of breechblock shows some wear and minor scratches. Frame screw-heads are good and not worn.

Dark oil finished walnut stock is in good used condition with the usual minor scratches, dings and dents. No markings on stock. Butt plate retains its original bluing. Both barrel bands are present as are the sling swivels. Proper ramrod is present.

Serial number is located under the barrel and forward of the trigger. The number at trigger is 15430.

The inventor of this weapon, Hugo Borchardt, later became famous for his automatic pistol as well as the basic design of the Luger pistol.
