Longarm is one of a total of 15,000 U.S. government ‘first contract’ model 1822 flintlock muskets that were altered to percussion starting in 1826. In fair to good overall condition, the musket was product of the Connecticut factory of Eli Whitney. Whitney died in 1825 and the firm was run by Eli’s nephews, Philos and E. W. Blake, until 1834. The Ordnance Dept extended the first contract until Jan 1836.

Original, altered lockplate bears the markings “U.S / P & E. W. BLAKE” to right of hammer and the arched, two-line stamp “NEW HAVEN / 1826” behind the hammer. Nipple is the cone-in conversion. Single shot muzzleloader is a .69 caliber smoothbore with a 42” long round barrel fitted to stock with three iron bands and band springs. No rear sight, as normal. Brass front blade sight sets on top of the double upper band which itself is stamped with “21.” Barrel breech exhibits “J. C.” over “raised ‘P’ in an oval.” Barrel tang dated with “_826.” Barrel muzzle bears a stud for a socket bayo. All gunmetal surfaces are heavily polished and exhibit a bright sheen overall with scattered rust pitting.

Musket has its original black walnut stock that has been slightly gone over but is in good condition. No repairs visible on stock. Does show normal amount of dings and dents from use. Left flat, with its strong edges, retains a deep single cartouche with inspector marks “J C” (Joseph Weatherhead). Mechanics very strong. All iron mountings. The 9½” long triggerguard has rounded ends. Both original sling swivel present. Retains its button head, steel ramrod with its threaded tip. Matching socket bayonet is included.  Bayo has the 8” fuller and the flat has the US inspector markings. Socket area shows various sub-inspector markings.
