ORIGINAL M1816 ‘WICKHAM’ UNALTERED FLINTLOCK MUSKET

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3352

Longarm specimen is an original M1816, undated musket made by Marine T. Wickham of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1813, Wickham was a government inspector of arms at a U.S. arsenal, and later was listed as a gunsmith in Maryland in the musket manufacturing business. The flintlock longarm was never converted to percussion.

Musket is a .69 caliber, single shot muzzleloader that retains all its original parts in good condition. The iron lock is round at front and slightly pointed at the tail. Lockplate is not dated but is marked in front of cock and reads “M. T. WICKHAM / PHILa” in a crescent. Lock is not dated. Frizzen has proper bend at top and the pan is brass which is also correct. Hammer has no flint. Action works well but is a bit stiff. All metal parts of the lock have a matching patina, light mottling and minor pinprick pitting.

Musket has a 42” long round barrel secured to the black walnut stock by three iron bands. Barrel surface is bright with moderate to heavy mottling and scattered minor pitting. Breech has stampings at the left side that read “P / US.” The breech tang like the lock has no date. Bayonet lug is present at top of muzzle. Bore is dark, dirty and pitted.

Black walnut stock is dark, uncleaned and original. Stock has no cartouche marks and shows moderate to heavy wear to include numerous scratches, loss of surface finish from rubbing and numerous dents. The lower sling swivel is mounted forward of the triggerguard while the middle barrel band supports the second swivel. Forward band is double and mounts the front sight. Weapon has the original button-head ramrod. Stock has a closed crack running approx. 4.00 inches parallel to the forward triggerguard tang before turning sharply toward the lock. Crack opens a little as it approaches the lock. The center right side of butt has an old gouge approx. 0.75 x 0.50 an inch.

A large trigger guard secures the lower sling swivel on a ball shaped device while the middle barrel band supports the second swivel. Bore is dark with light rust pitting that should clean up some. Original button-head ramrod is present with worn threaded end.  [ad]
