This original British longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket in very good condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that replaced all earlier infantry models in the British Army. Over 500,000 Pattern 1853 muskets were also purchased / imported by the US Ordnance Department during the Civil War.

Weapon measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. Barrel surface has not been cleaned and wears a pleasing dusky mottled gray patina. Front blade sight is present as is correct leaf rear sight. Breech and bolster area show very light pitting and some grip-vice teeth marks. Viewer’s marks are clear on the left side of the barrel at breech. Bore is clean with good rifling and has just scattered hints of rust oxidation.

The lockplate surface is dusky gray and exhibits a mild peppery look from oxidation. Lock markings are the standard Queen’s crown minus the “VR” back of the hammer with block letters “TOWER” over “1862” forward of the hammer. Mechanics are strong.

All brass furniture exhibits a pleasing mellow patina. Black walnut stock is strong with a surface that is lightly cleaned.  Stock has some minor dings, dents and scratches consistent with age. No visible cracks. Lockplate screw heads are good. All three barrel bands are present as well as both sling swivels. Faint letter “Z” stamped forward of the triggerguard tang. Correct ramrod is present and is complete.    [ad]
